One of the privileges of leading MetCredit is watching people grow in various ways.
Sometimes that growth comes through a promotion. Other times, from taking on new responsibilities. Occasionally, it involves making a life-changing decision that extends well beyond the workplace.
Recently, two members of our team, Manbir and Jas, made exactly that kind of decision.
Together with their young son and daughter, they relocated from our Burnaby office to MetCredit’s head office in Edmonton, beginning another chapter in a journey that had already required remarkable courage and determination.
Their story began long before they joined MetCredit.
Both were practicing lawyers in India before making the difficult decision to immigrate to Canada.
Like many highly educated newcomers, they understood that building a new life would require starting over professionally while learning an entirely new legal system, establishing new careers, and creating opportunities for their family.
Those aren’t easy choices.
They take confidence, resilience, and a willingness to think beyond immediate circumstances, fears and discomfort.
Manbir joined MetCredit in October 2023, later moving into our Legal Recovery team, while Jas joined in August 2024 and quickly established herself as an energetic and determined recovery professional, successfully managing both consumer and commercial accounts.
Now, they have chosen to take another significant step.
Looking at the Bigger Picture
When people hear that someone has moved from Greater Vancouver to Edmonton, the conversation almost always turns to winter.
But that perspective misses a much bigger, more complicated story.
Manbir and Jas have already adapted to dramatic changes in climate and culture after leaving India, where many regions regularly experience summer temperatures exceeding 35°C (and often much higher).
Relocating within Canada was never simply a question of weather. Like many young families, they looked at the complete picture of WHERE they wanted to build their future.
And Edmonton offers one of the most compelling value propositions in Canada.
Housing remains among the most affordable of any major Canadian city, allowing many families to purchase a home years earlier than they could in Metro Vancouver.
Alberta’s absence of a provincial sales tax, growing and diversified economy, excellent healthcare system, highly respected schools and universities, and abundant parks and recreation all contribute to a quality of life that continues to attract Canadians from across the country.
Those advantages become even more meaningful when you’re raising children and planning decades into the future.
Another important consideration for many newcomer families is finding a place where they can build connections while preserving the traditions that matter to them.
Edmonton has become one of Canada’s most culturally diverse cities, with vibrant Punjabi, Sikh, South Asian, Filipino, African, Middle Eastern, Chinese, Ukrainian, Indigenous and many other communities working together to shape the city’s identity.
New restaurants, places of worship, cultural organizations and businesses continue to reflect that growth, making it easier for newcomers to feel at home while becoming part of the broader community.
That spirit of inclusion is perhaps best illustrated every August during the Edmonton Heritage Festival. Recognized as the world’s largest three-day celebration of multiculturalism, the festival brings together dozens of cultural communities to share their food, music, dance and traditions with hundreds of thousands of visitors.
After returning to Hawrelak Park this year, the 2026 festival attracted its largest crowds ever, demonstrating not only how much Edmonton has grown, but how enthusiastically its residents embrace learning about (and celebrating) the cultures of their neighbours. It’s a reminder how diversity is something this city loves to celebrate together.
As Jas shared while preparing for the move, the decision was driven by a desire to give their family every opportunity to grow. She believes Edmonton offers the kind of environment where both their careers and their children can flourish.
Continuing Their Professional Journey
The move also allows Manbir and Jas to continue developing their careers within MetCredit.
Jas now manages a portfolio of consumer and commercial accounts, including many larger-balance recoveries where persistence, professionalism, and excellent communication produce results.
Manbir focuses on post-judgment recovery within our Legal Department, where his legal education and analytical approach have proven valuable. His longer-term goal is to qualify as a barrister and solicitor in Ontario through Canada’s accreditation process for internationally trained lawyers. Once licensed, he will be positioned to support MetCredit’s legal operations in Ontario while opening additional opportunities for future legal practice across Canada.
He sees the move to Edmonton as another investment in that long-term vision, explaining that every stage of his family’s journey has required learning something new while keeping their focus on where they ultimately want to be.
A Story That Reflects What Canada Can Offer
Every family’s circumstances are different, and it excites me how there are more paths than ever to building a successful life in Canada.
What inspires me about Manbir and Jas is their willingness to embrace change when they believe it creates greater opportunity.
They left established legal careers to build new ones.
First, they embraced the challenge of starting over in a new country.
And now they have chosen to relocate again because they see Edmonton as the right place to build the next chapter of their family’s life.
Those are brave decisions.
They’re also thoughtful, smart, practical ones grounded in careful planning and optimism for the future.
As I reflect on their journey, I encourage other members of our MetCredit family in Burnaby, Mississauga, and Montréal to consider what Edmonton has to offer. A move isn’t the right decision for everyone, but for many professionals and young families, Alberta provides an exceptional combination of career opportunity, financial stability, and quality of life.
We enthusiastically welcome Manbir, Jas, and their family to Edmonton, and we’re excited to see everything they’ll accomplish in the years ahead.
